Gimme Back My Time!

It’s the last few weeks of summer and I don’t know about you but I am SOAKING up every minute of it! At the same time I am also looking forward to getting back to few more ‘disciplined’ routines and bringing some structure back to our world around mealtimes, daily routines and training schedules. What is your fall looking like? Have you structured and carved out TIME to care for yourself?

Do you ever feel like…”I don’t have enough time for ….” or “If only I had an extra hour our 10 in the day THEN I would get to do what I really want to do.”

Hmmm…. do you think that is actually true? I disagree. This is a behavioural issue. The more time you open up the more you will fill with the same stuff.

We all have the same amount of time in the day but too many of us are giving all our time AWAY! Why? Because we are trying to keep our fingers on top of everything and “help” everyone out – aka micromanage everything from laundry to work projects to planning events. It’s been a tough lesson for me to learn but one I am so glad I am learning this. In order for what I REALLY want to do to actually happen in my life I have to LET GO of all the other insignificant stuff that other people can really take care of for themselves. If I want to have the time to get my workouts in, to eat clean, to spend time with family and work on quality projects at work – I need to create that space and give the other stuff away.

We have totally misunderstood the meaning of the word “support”. We think to support our kids means doing their homework and lunches for them or driving them everywhere, supporting our spouse means taking all the load at home, supporting friends mean being there every single text/call or message. What’s really happening is that while you are “supporting” everyone else you do so at your own expense. This isn’t support at all. Are they actually unable to physically do this stuff?

How about this for a change? ENABLE others by teaching them how to do things themselves, giving them the resources to get it done and then Let it go! Gotta tell you it feels pretty good. Then… Protect that time with all your might!! Schedule your own “ME” time whether that is your workout or time to hit the farmers market and enjoy a shopping experience for once. So this fall…. your challenge is – create the space! You only get ONE body in this lifetime and you have 100% control over whether you choose to move it, strengthen it and treat it with kindness. There will be endless piles of laundry and phone calls but each day you put your body and mind aside it costs you. What will YOU Do?

DECIDE what really matters to you?

ENABLE others to do things by teaching them “How to” (make your lunch, arrange a ride, create a presentation…)

LET GO. This is a biggie. Don’t micromanage or you will be creating more stress for yourself.

PROTECT your personal time. DO what you said you were going to do with it.

DO IT! We find people who schedule their workouts in at regular intervals and times have a much higher attendance and success rate over a 12 month period.

Ok ready .. set .. go! Start today with one small thing and get started with reclaiming your time.
