To most people sugar can be very much like a drug. We crave it. We experience a crash from it (often around 3pm in the afternoon!) and we even have horrible withdrawal symptoms like moodiness, headaches, fatigue when we can’t get our hands on it. But, did you know that often these symptoms arise from little critters inside of you called “candida”, who feed off of sugar?

Candida is a type of yeast that is naturally occurring on and in the human body. In particular, the species “candida albicans” live in your gastrointestinal tract and help to maintain a healthy, balanced flora. However, it is when the equilibrium of our intestines is offset that a yeast overgrowth can occur and cause damage to other parts of our body resulting in a number of unfavourable symptoms.

Antibiotics are a major culprit when it comes to upsetting the balance of healthy bacteria in our gut. They wipe out all bacteria from the body (good and bad) allowing for the candida to flourish. Although antibiotics is thought to be the worst offender, birth control, antacids and steroids can also cause an overpopulation of yeast as they all tend to disrupt the natural conditions of our GI tract.

Refined carbohydrates, sugar and alcohol help to feed candida creating a vicious cycle of symptoms and also major cravings for bread (See our Wheat Belly Blog!), candy, beer ,etc. making it seem nearly impossible to avoid! As mentioned before, the overgrowth can extend to other parts of the body allowing for a whole variety of reactions. Did you know that the following symptoms or conditions could indicate a candida overgrowth?

-Skin & nail fungal infections (athlete’s foot)

-Yeast infections & UTI’s (recurring)

-Skin issues such as eczema, psoriasis, hives & rashes

-Auto-immune diseases like Hashimoto’s or Grave’s disease (over & under active thyroid), Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus, Psoriasis, & Ulcerative colitis.

– Brain fog, lack of concentration, poor memory, & ADD/ ADHD.

-Anxiety, depression, irritability and general, unexplained mood swings

-Extreme fatigue and low energy, chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia
