When your goal feels like so far away

Are you in the midst of a journey? Do you have a goal or something you are working towards that you really want and hope to reach but you know it’s not going to be fast or easy?

Trying to lose a big chunk of weight? Have a dream to run a 5k, 10k or your first marathon?

Often we set a goal for ourselves because we need a shake up! Maybe our doctor told us we have to do something about our weight. Maybe it’s a picture of yourself that was shocking. Maybe you just want to break a plateau or take your fitness to a whole new level. Whatever it is you are ALL IN!

Been there?

In the beginning it’s exciting.  It’s new, fun and a change to our routine is refreshing! We see a bit of change or momentum in the direction we are going and that gives us fuel to keep pressing on. We diligently stick to that meal plan, schedule our training sessions and don’t miss a beat!

Things are rocking and we are proud of it!

Then…. we get tired. We take a day off or someone throws a party, or our kids get sick and we stray. In that moment – where you need to go seems so far away! Perhaps you even allow some stinkin’ thinking to start invading your head space.

I want to remind you that its OK (and necessary) to PAUSE, LOOK BACK and instead of focusing on how far away your goal is, look AT HOW FAR you have come! STOP and celebrate for goodness sake!

I say this to you because last week I was in Canmore and we decided to take on Hi Ling Peak in Canmore. If you don’t know what that is – it’s a hike to the top of a peak that has THE most spectacular panoramic view of snow covered tops and lakes below. It also has a super steep climb and it’s straight up for 1.5 hours on a good day with the top being very rugged (they call it the scramble). That would be 1.5 hours of ‘step ups’ non-stop.

But it was going to be worth it!  I started out gangbusters with my backpack and trail shoes on thinking “I got this! I am fit, I have strong legs and a good cardio base so this should be a piece of cake!”

It WAS beautiful. It was doable. I did LOVE breathing in the fresh air and taking in the view. BUT my legs burned, I was sweating and my backpack was soaked before we got half way up. Every time I looked up I was like “Really? We are still that far away?!”

But – here is the key – I stopped, I turned around and decided to take in the view. To look down and see where we started compared to where we were was motivating and made me think “whoo hoo! we are crushing this thing!”.

Funny. Where you focus your attention can create that much of a difference. Today I want to challenge you. Where do you focus?

When you are focused on how far you have to go,  Stop and look back at how far you’ve come.

Here are some great questions to ask yourself:

  1. Where am I headed? What goals am I working towards right now?
  2. Where am I  today?
  3. Looking back – I see how FAR I’ve come. Here is a list of things I have accomplished or milestones I have hit! (list them!)

I would love to hear from you! Please comment and share below and as always if this is an area you struggle with I want to encourage to take this action step.

ACTION STEP: Buy yourself a journal and for the next 30 days simply write 1 thing a day you feel successful about. That’s it. If you want to write more but start with one thing. Don’t let a day go by without writing something down. At the end of 30 days read your accomplishments and celebrate how far you’ve come.

Here’s to you and ACHIEVING your GOALS – one small step at a time!
